Maybe you’re on the other side of 25 feeling like your skin might be losing a bit of its usual youthful glow. I have to admit, buying my first cream with the words anti-aging glued on the front was a completely nauseating experience. Don’t even get me started on my first wrinkle.

When I was 20, I wish someone explained it to me like this: anti-aging products simply help protect and preserve your skin where it is now, before it starts to show signs of aging. I would have started these steps long ago had I known. But alas, we all know by now that miracle creams no matter how natural, organic, and expensive, can only achieve so much facial greatness.

So, here are the other five things we can do, to help maintain youthful, healthy skin!

1.) Operation hydration.

Drink water, religiously. How much? Lots! If you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated and so is your skin. Start with the standard eight glasses per day and be sure to spread them out. Chugging it all down at once isn’t helpful or good for your body. Listen and learn your body. If you’re still feeling thirsty, drink more water. If you’re feeling water-logged, slow it down.

2.) Exfoliate, but not too much.

Your skin needs help shedding layers of dead skin cells which increases circulation and brightens your skin. Once or twice a week should suffice. If you are showing signs of irritation, drop down to once a week. Make sure you choose an exfoliator that has round, circular beads or particles to avoid damaging your skin.

3.) Moisturize!

Choose your moisturizer carefully. Aim for ingredients like vitamin C and vitamin K, then apply after showering or washing your face to seal in moisture! Be sure to choose a moisturizer that is made for your complexion.

4.) We all scream for sunscreen!

Opt for a mineral-based SPF which protects your skin against the full spectrum of UV rays. Mineral-based sunscreens are free of chemicals and act like a barrier on your skin. They are gentler and less likely to cause acne and irritation for those with sensitive skin.

5.) Amp up the nutrients in your diet!

Consume foods that are nutrient-dense and rich in antioxidants. Fill your plate with fresh berries, veggies, and greens. What you put into your body shines through and radiates on the outside. Ready, set, get your glow on!
